THE INSTITUTE OF SUSTAINABILITY IS REVITALIZING COMMUNITIES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PRACTICES

It makes sense for a business to obtain certification and strive to make operational improvements while helping the environment.  It makes a great story for the business and creates a lasting legacy for the community it serves.

moore...Doug Moore,  CEO

Seeking a solution, he began a journey that would change his life and foster a positive environmental legacy for generations to come.

Doug Moore spent the first half of his career building one of the largest publishing companies in America.  He founded Vulcan Publishing in 1987, and when it was sold in in 2005, revenues from their 60 media properties topped $50 million in sales and had more than 400 employees.  A father of six, landowner, and avid outdoorsman, his attention shifted to environmental issues out of concern for rampant pollution and waste generated by our consumer society.

He sought the answer to questions vexing environmentalists worldwide:

Help2

How do we meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own?

Help2

How can we humans synchronize our consumption of natural resources with the earth's production?

His answer is a simple mission statement: Help 1 million business executives and their employees adopt sustainable practices that conserve at least 10% of the resources they currently consume, saving the business money while preserving the environment for future generations.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE 10% MAKES!

In achieving this mission, what is the net result if the  average business is 2,000 sq. ft, and  20 employees?

  • Energy:  Eliminate the need for 7,146 coal-fired power plants producing 375 MW of electricity.
  • Water:  Conserve 5,385,600,000 gallons of water, the equivalent used annually by 41,000 households.
  • Waste:  Keep 3,650,000,000 tons out of the waste stream- enough to fill 182 million 20-ton garbage trucks or 18,250 average-size 200,000 ton capacity landfills per year.
  • Pollution:  Lower pollution by 40,000,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year- the equivalent of taking 60 million cars off the road or planting 13 billion trees.
